Overview of Strategy

Like mind maps and concept maps, retrieval charts are highly effective graphic organisers to help structure students’ thinking. The visual format uses as few words as possible when collating, sorting, classifying, comparing and contrasting brainstormed information and surveyed data. They can be used for a variety of purposes, for example, to keep track of related ideas/thoughts from a brainstorming session, for organising information about a topic, or to compare and contrast a variety of criteria on a given topic.

In the design process, retrieval charts are particularly useful for exploring and defining the task, unpacking the design brief, organising and analysing data, identifying and evaluating existing solutions, identifying needs and opportunities.

This activity is a graphic organiser which is used to categorise data.

  • Retrieval charts are varied depending on the number of key concepts relevant to the topic.

  • The headings determine the number of the columns for the table, and the number of rows depends on the scope of the information.

  • Students in groups of three or four complete the table.
