Australian Curriculum General Capabilities: Critical and creative thinking Australian Curriculum General Capabilities: Ethical Understanding Australian Curriculum General Capabilities: Intercultural Understanding Philosophy Cooperative Learning Activity
1. As a group of 3 - 5 students, you are going to investigate the idea that "a Captain must go down with their ship!"
2. Investigate the following articles about the Captain of the Titanic who is held up as a Captain who went down with his ship, the Titanic in April 1912.
Divide up the
reading within the group by having each student select one article. Use
the
Expert Jigsaw Strategy to collate all the relevant information about
Captain Edward Smith.
3. Use the Retrieval Chart Strategy to list all the facts about Captain Smith from these articles. Was there any conflicting information presented?
4. Let's go beyond Captain Smith and investigate the idea that "a Captain MUST go down with his (her) ship". Is this just a myth or have there been legal issues surrounding Captains who did not do this? What are the ethics of this statement?
Again, divide up the reading between the students in the group. Again use the Expert Jigsaw Strategy to obtain the information. This time mindmap the information to answer the questions above. Use one of the mindmapping websites listed here to complete this task.
5. Discussion.
Discuss these questions as a group and then as a class group.
