1. You are to read "Seadog" by Claire Saxby as a class. Yes it is for children from 0 - 6 but you are to get an idea of how to create a new story, picture book and cover about "Seadog"!

Here are some reports about Seadog if you can't read the story....

a. In Seadog, a young boy describes his playful and mischievous pet. Seadog is not a fetch dog, neither is he a tricks dog nor a particularly clean dog. He doesn’t like baths much either. But his owners love him just the way he is.

b. A beautiful picture book about a lovable, but scruffy dog. "Our dog is not a clean dog, a shiny or a fluffy dog. Our dog is a seadog". The story follows the fun-loving dog playing on the beach and getting smelly. He is taken home to have a bath and becomes ...

c. A lively and entertaining picture book about a scruffy but lovable pet dog with an aversion to grooming” ”Our dog is not a clean dog, “a shiny or a fluffy dog.
Our dog is a seadog . . .” ”Seadog loves to chase birds and find and roll around in fish but doesn’t like to take baths. But even this dog knows the importance of getting clean and will stay still until he’s all cleaned up.

Not since Harry the Dirty Dog has there been such a lovable puppy with such an aversion to grooming.”

2. You are to imagine you are "Seadog" and, imagine that your "Seadog" was going [at long last] to be groomed at a Pet Groomers instead at home in the bath!

You, Seadog, are going to meet the following dogs who have also come to be groomed that day at the Pet Groomers:

A white noisy Poodle who likes to get her way called Posh

White Poodle
A small inquisitive Havanese who gets into mischief whenever he can. He is called Biscuit.

Havanese

A black playful & intelligent Scottish Terrier called Hamish

Scottish Terrier
A smart, proud Shihtzu called Pretty who just likes to dominate the rest.

Shihtzu

3. You, Seadog, are to have an adventure at the pet grooming place! Some suggestions.....

  • What is the name of the Pet Groomer's shop
  • What are you going to do?
  • Will you share your fleas with Pretty?
  • Will you escape with Hamish back to the sea after the groom - how will anyone recognise you?
  • How will Biscuit react to my grooming - what mischief will he get up to while I'm being groomed?
  • What will Posh think of all this Seadog grooming?

 Predict what will happen next!

Storyboard your ideas on a big sheet of white paper. Select your other dog and start drawing it.

4. Write up this adventure as a picture book noting that the title is "How would I groom this dog?" and it is to be a sequence to "Seadog".

5. Illustrate your story using similar illustrations to Tom Jellett.

1. You have a new business! A pet grooming business! As you don't have the money to rent and fit out a room, you have decided that you are going to buy and fit out a mobile pet groomers van instead.  The bank has seen your business plan and has lent you $60K.

2. You are to:

  • work out the name of your business
  • develop a logo using this new name
  • buy a mobile van but stay in budget
  • fit it out with the latest pet grooming equipment! What will you need? Don't forget to add the long hose so you can attach it to the client's water tap and a long extension cord to use their electricity too - the bath has to be warm and the clippers used!
  • decide how much you will charge per: hair clipping, nail clipping, shampoo, and blow-dry
  • Work out what you can do to add value to your clients' experience [including their owners] - see "Bark & Collar" below
  • Work out if you were able to clip and shampoo 4 - 6 dogs in one day [and travel only 50kms - petrol/maintenance costs would be $20] how long will it be before you can pay off your loan?
  • How many days a week will you work?
  • What are some of the challenges you think you might face? Physically? Emotionally? Mentally?
