Students discuss GIS and its impacts on our everyday lives. They use ropes or string to simulate GIS technology, and then discuss how GIS helps users with data visualization and analysis.

This activity needs to be adapted to Australian conditions and information.  Students in Step 4 are to re-create a map of Australia including Tasmania.

This project is part of Investigating Your World With My World GIS, a set of activities designed for use with My World GIS software. Each activity was developed by an active curriculum developer and user of My World GIS in K-12 and higher education. The set of activities was designed to span a range of curricular areas and grade levels and to use the powerful features of My World GIS to help students learn key content and practice spatial problem solving. Frances Moore's Comment - I tried this programme and it said I was too late in the day to be using it - so the clock is based on US times. As teachers, you will have to think about overcoming this obstacle. Looks like this program costs $ but as teachers you might be able to have the software for free for 90 days.

The whole exercise can be adapted to Australian conditions and realities - but the basis is excellent. A trip [excursion] to the local cementery and the collection of data using Excel and Google Maps is an option. Map the details back at school using the local cementery's map and the data collected.
