Gruen website

Context: The Gruen was first established in 2008 as the “Gruen Transfer” - an ABC Australian television program focusing on advertising. In shopping mall design, the Gruen transfer (also known as the Gruen Effect) is the moment when consumers enter a shopping mall and, surrounded by an intentionally confusing layout, lose track of their original intentions, making consumers more susceptible to make impulse buys. It is named for Austrian architect Victor Gruen, who disavowed such manipulative techniques.

1. You are to become part of the Gruen team!

2. Select a group of 5 team members.

3. You are to view and analyse the following videos – ads from universities as part of their marketing campaigns:

  • Appeal to audience – does it appeal? Why? Why not?
  • Message: What was the message? Did it appeal? Why? Why not?
  • Was there a story? What was it about?
  • Appropriate music? Why? Why not?
  • Cast or images. Did you like the visual effects? Why? Why not?
  • Which video appeal to you directly? Why?
  • Would you consider going to this university after seeing the university’s ad? Why? Why not?
  • What would you change to make it more appealing to you or your class mates?

1. In groups of 3 - 4 students, you are going to create a school flyer advertising your school. To help you, you are to go to CANVA Flyer

CANVA

There is a video on this page which gives you the ideas and plans on how to use a free flyer maker. As a group, you need to view this video [you might need to view it several times].

2. Your group needs to write the text and gather photos of the school. You might collect the school's logo. As a marketing officer, you need to sell your school. This means you select images and text about all the good things at your school.

3. DON'T order the prints from CANVA. Just convert your design to a PDF and get your school to print it.

4. Flyer Distributor. As a class, you are to go to your local mall. Think about where the best spots are in the mall to distribute the most flyers.

Make sure your uniform is perfect - you are selling your school. You must be in your group.

5. Back in your classroom. What did you learn about being a flyer distributor? Was it hard? Were some people rude? How did you cope?
