3. In the Translate Box,

Translate box
type in a sentence of phrase and select a new language to translate the phrase into.

Repeat this step multiple times, selecting a different language each time.

Once it has been translated two or three times return the  phrase to English (or the original language you typed in).

Did the phrase change or stay the same? What was different?

What could be the some of the possible reasons for this outcome?

Why would just translating from one language to another not always be a good option?

When would it be ok to use Google Translate?

What is the difference between Translating and Interpreting?

1. The Interpreter is a 2005 political thriller film starring Nicole Kidman, Sean Penn, Catherine Keener, and Jesper Christensen. Look at the Trailer below:

2. To understand the plot and to analyse the parallels between President Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe) and the character of Dr Zuwanie in the film, read the account from Wikipedia:

3. The Directors took the trouble to consult UN Interpreters at length to make Kidman's character as convincing as possible (even getting her character to play the flute as a lot of UN Interpreters are musical). (Source: AIIC)

4. But this movie was made in 2005. What about today? What issues are present in the UN now? Would they be ripe for another political thriller?

Having a character similar to Nicole Kidman's in The Interpreter, write a new script with a different plot but still with the Interpreter as the main character for the Trailer of your new movie using the current UN conflicts. You might have to search around this UN website.

Rotten Tomatoes Trailers

TeacherTeacher - Language Teachers

1. You are to choose a current film, TV show or Streaming Trailer - Rotten Tomatoes Trailers are a good place to start - and, get the students, individually, to write the subtitles in your teaching language. There are complex trailers and more simple ones for you to choose.

2. After completing their subtitles, get the students, in pairs, to compare their subtitles and discuss any changes the other partner would make explaining their reasoning. Speak in language if possible.

3. Get the pairs to then join with other pair and repeat the process.

4. This group is to choose which one they would like to highlight by speaking the subtitles as the trailer is played.
