NumeracyAustralian Curriculum General Capability: Numeracy

1. Chocolate balls require the following ingredients:

Chocolate Balls

1 packet of Arnotts Nice Biscuits or 250g packet of plain sweet biscuits Nice Biscuits
1 Tin of Condensed Milk (not lite) - 395g Condensed Milk
2 Heaped Tablespoons of Cocoa Powder
1 Cup of desiccated coconut (plus more for rolling the balls into)

2. Method

a. Crush the biscuits until they are like fine breadcrumbs and put into a large bowl

b. Add coconut, cocoa powder and condensed milk into the bowl and stir in until fully mixed. Use a spatula to mix - not your hands as you will find you will lose a lot of the ingredients on your hands!

c. Prepare two separate bowls - one for water and one for coconut. Also have your flat tray ready to put your balls onto.

d. Wet your hands and then take one tablespoon of the mixture and roll into balls. Toss in the coconut and place onto the tray.

e. Place into the fridge for 20 - 40 minutes to harden. You can also put into the freezer.

f. Prepare the bowl or box to place the chocolate balls into to create a Christmas or Easter present. Use cellophane and ribbon to showoff your beautiful balls.

This lesson demonstrates how product design differences can affect the success of a final product — in this case a bag for holding candy. Students work in pairs to design and build a better candy bag.
Learn how design impacts product performance.
Design a better candy bag using science, mathematics, and engineering concepts and applications.

Cooperative LearningCooperative Learning Activity

1. In groups of 4 - 5 students, you are to re-create a WebQuest - a higher order thinking task.

Uncovering Chocolate Slavery WebQuest is a very good WebQuest but targeted for students in Years 3 - 6.

Uncovering Chocolate Slavery WebQuest

2. As a group, you are to re-create this WebQuest with

  • more complex tasks,
  • more up-to-date resources to challenge the Year 7 - 10 students at your school to take a stance about modern Slavery.

3. Divide your group into Researchers and Thinkers.

The Researchers are to obtain new up to date resources that will allow other students to see what happens in the production of the beans in Africa and South America.

The Thinkers are to create at least 3 thinking tasks. These tasks should have an ethical slant to them.

As a group, come together for the last 10 minutes of each lesson to discuss what you have learnt and what is to be done next. At the beginning of each lesson, divide up the ideas and either research or create around these ideas.

4. You might consider re-looking at the Conclusion  and ask the students do to promote Fair Trade products in the school canteen and within their homes.

What action will you take now?
