1. Back in 2015, the Sydney Morning Herald ran a story "Only 10 per cent women in construction and building industry" 3 December 2015. Reading

SMH

Part of the story: "First-year apprentice carpenter Desiree Owens is often told: "Building sites aren't for females."

Perhaps that is why she is one of only 149 women in NSW who is doing a construction apprenticeship.

There are 305,000 people employed in the construction and building industry across the state and only 0.05% are women.

"I've had a lot of people ask me what I am doing and said building sites aren't for females – I think that would put a lot of females off," Ms Owens said.

"We have a cultural problem. It's seen as male only trade – we need to do some work in that place," he said.

But despite the barriers, Ms Owens said she was proud to be working in the industry and following in the footsteps of her father, who is a scaffolder.

"It's such a good industry to get into – you are always hands on, staying fit and you are gaining so many skills," the 20-year-old said.

"We can do anything men can do, you just have to give us a chance. You teach us, and we are going to be just as good as the guys."" (SMH)

2. In groups of 4 - 5 students, write down the reasons given for "Construction is the last frontier for women at work" from the following SMH article 6 December 2016 Reading

SMH

3. In your group, survey the school students by asking their opinion about building sites, females and particularly carpenters. What did you find? Is construction the last place that females think they will enter? Why? Why not?

4. Discussion

Discuss as a class whether this statement

"Building sites aren't for females" is still the case!
