1. This activity is for those students who are interested in becoming a Nurse, OT, Paramedic, Doctor, Physiotherapist, Chiropractor or part of the Aged Care team.

In groups of 3 - 4 students, you are to read the following article from The Conversation 4 June 2018, and list the interesting and educational facts.  Reading

The Conversation

2. As a group, you are to create a Public Service Announcement [PSA] to inform the community about avoiding hip fractures in older people online using a free tool Padlet, an online noticeboard.

Padlet

3. To create a PSA, you need to follow these steps:

  • Brainstorm the problem - avoiding hip fractures in older people

  • Look at what has been done already on YouTube. Analyse 10 and work out which is the best one. Answer the question: what makes this PSA so effective? Mood-evoking music? Dramatic camera angles? Shows the problem and some solutions. Only around 60 seconds or less.

  • Have each person in the group come up with 3 questions they want to know about this topic. Keep exploring: Why??? What is the root of the problem of hip fractures. Go back over the article.

  • Storyboard: as a group, sketch how your film will look frame by frame. You need to include any text, spoken words, music and/or video hints you plan to use in your film. Just a quick sketch.

  • Present this storyboard to your teacher or parent. This step is to get feedback before you commit to the video.

  • Create and edit your PSA. Add images and do voiceovers. Add music.

4. Share with the other groups in the class.

5. Reflection

Reflection.

Personally, what suggestions would you give to an older relative about ways to avoid a hip fracture after completing this task? Would you show them your group's PSA? Why? Why not?
