2.  TeacherTeacher

You are to conduct a class Community of Inquiry. Look up this page to see how to conduct it.

Community of Inquiry

Students

Look at this Question Quadrant, and in pairs, write up 2 questions for each quadrant. Eg. A question for inquiry could be eg. "What is ordinary?"

Question Quadrant

3. Select one of your inquiry questions and your teacher will write it up on the board with your names next to it. Your teacher will write up one question from each pair from the Philosophical or Inquiry question quadrant.

4. Teacher - Ask the students to think about grouping the questions - the ones that are the same or similar - together.

As a class, look at all the inquiry questions and select one question that seems to be most popular question that needs answering amongst the whole class to discuss.

Start the discussion with the most asked question from one of the pairs that asked that question.

Obey the rules of a Philosophical or Inquiry Community of Inquiry:

  • Only one person speaks at a time
  • Pay attention to the person who is speaking
  • Give other people a chance to speak
  • Build upon other people's ideas
  • No put-downs

Go to this website and look at the various stories there. Select one story to read and deeply think about. Share with your partner.

Is there anything like this in Australia? How could you support such a venture to commence here in Australia?

7. Reflection

Reflection

What is your reaction to seeing someone who is "different"? Write down your thoughts and feelings.

Would you go and see the movie (2017) Wonder? Why? Why not?

1. Michelle Smith, Research fellow in English Literature at Deakin University states in The Conversation 29 April 2016: Reading

The Conversation

"In reality, cosmetic surgeons are instruments of shifting whims about what is attractive. They have helped people to conceal or transform features that might make them stand out as once diseased, ethnically different, “primitive”, too feminine, or too masculine."

Is this really the case?

Read the article and discuss as a class the question: Reading

Are Cosmetic Surgeons the instruments of shifting whims about what is attractive?

2. Read the following article from The Conversation 9 June 2016

3. Make either

  • an infographic about the five cosmetic surgery trends using Canva or Piktochart, or

  • a podcast using PodBean
