1.  "In 2018, holidays were Australia's biggest entertainment expense and we were splashing out more than ever on overseas trips in particular. Australians spent around $172 a week on recreation in 2015-16, according to the ABS household expenditure survey, released last year.

That's a slight fall from 2009-10, when recreational spending was $184 a week.

Households spent $76 a week on holidays in 2015-16, almost 30 per cent more than in 2009-10, with spending on overseas holidays up 50 per cent.

The biggest spending fall was on TVs: households spent nearly 60 per cent less on those than in 2009-10."

Is this the case for your household especially since the COVID-19 pandemic?

2. You will need to draw up a table with the same headings eg. holidays to magazines & comics. In the columns, have "Guess" and then another column "Actual expenditure".

3. Under your chart's headings get your parents or carers to guess how much they spend on each of the items. You may include other headings eg. Board games.

4. Let's see if these guesses are real...

Individually, and with the approval of your parents or carers, you are going to keep a record of all the transactions that occur in your household relating to entertainment for one month.

Find out the following information - Expenditure on:

a.  Holidays - then average this expenditure over the year to find out what is spent each week.

b. Sports lessons, games & equipment; attendance at games - average it out to find out what is spent each week.

c. Digital Film/TV content/Phone charges

d. Internet account charges

e. Gambling

f. Televisions

g. Books

h. Magazines & comics

i. Other....

5. Add up the expenditures - "Guess" and "Actual". Compare the totals - were these totals very different?

Reflection
Reflect on the findings as a family.

6. "Australians spent around $172 a week on recreation" according to the ABS report. How much does your family spend on recreation each week? Is it very different to the $172/week recorded here? Why? Why not?
