1:2:4 (1:2:4: 8 etc.) Strategy encourages the individuals in a team to
each fully contribute to the team’s task.
The 1-2-4-All technique is a facilitation method that helps groups
generate ideas efficiently and inclusively. It can be used in any
setting and with any group size. The technique involves the following
steps:
Individual thinking: Participants reflect on a question or challenge for
one minute.
Pair sharing: Participants pair up and share their reflections for two
minutes.
Group of four: Participants join groups of four and share and develop
ideas for four minutes.
All together: The facilitator asks each group to share their main idea
with the whole group for five minutes.
The 1-2-4-All technique can help: Incorporate silent conversations,
Improve consensus and shared understanding, Expand input diversity, Hear
all voices, and Improve outcomes with iterative feedback.
The entire cycle can take as little as 10 minutes, but shouldn't be
longer than 15 minutes. If more time is needed, it's better to do a
second cycle than to let the steps go on too long.
