1. Bob the Builder (the original version) was loved by young children in many countries. Scoop was the very first machine owned by Bob the Builder.

Scoop is a yellow backhoe digger with a black cab and an orange siren on his can. He has a diesel engine and has an exhaust pipe coming out of the right side of his hood. He has large, rugged all season tires in the rear and small, rugged all season tires in the front. He is the leader of the machines.

As a pair, you are to create a new episode making sure that Roley is also involved as he too has a mobile plant operator! The new episode is to be 2 minutes in length.

3. Work out your story together on a story board.

1. Mobile Plant Operators are used within the mining industry to scrap and strip the earth to get to the minerals underneath. But what happens when a mine is "finished"? What should happen to the holes in the ground? Australia has legal requirements but are these being met?

In groups of four, allocate each person to read the one of following articles from The Conversation and note the different points of view. Reading

Summarise each article and write down the examples in a table.

2. Discussion

Discuss as a group whether restoration can occur after mining.

  • What are the problems?
  • Are there any long term problems that need to be considered?
  • What impact do these problems have on the environment? People?
  • What solutions have occurred? Internationally? Australian? Are there differences? Why?

3. As a group, you are to come up with a creative solution for Leigh Creek Mine, SA. [Resources below]

You need to consider:

  • Indigenous culture
  • Native plants and fauna
  • Tourism benefits (as Leigh Creek is part of the Flinders Ranges)
  • Use of the current facilities at Leigh Creek township
  • The scale of the rehabitation
