Cupcake Stand

First, read through the following steps from The Guardian Reading

How to create a vintage cake stand

2. Have a look at the following video to see if you can create these marvellous stands.
https://youtu.be/_Rr9G_r-Obs Video

2. Once you have decided you can create these stands, you need to assess the market for them. Ask around the school and your parents' friends. Will they buy these stands?

3. After you have assess a market, start collecting the plates.

Remember to buy [cheaply!] from charity shops or beg from relatives any old plates - dinner, bread and butter or saucers. Keep a record of the amount of money you have spent in an Excel spreadsheet.

A good way to find these plates is at any boot sales or local markets or fetes.

A great way to buy the tiers between the plates is on eBay for around $3.70 each packet.

4. How will you sell these stands? What is your pitch? How will you convince people to buy these stands?

a. What will be the price of your stands?
To find out you need to estimate the sale price of the stands and take into account to cover your costs [materials, labour and also any costs from the market place [hiring a stall].

There will be different prices for the number of plates [3 or 4] used. Make sure you will create a profit - a good profit!

b. You need to find out where to sell these stands - markets are a great place! How will you promote your stands? What will be your story about selling these stands? Do you need to create a business card with your name and phone number? What will attract people to your stand?

c. Go to the local markets with 5 stands made and sell them.

d. Reflection

Reflection.

What profit did you make?
Will you go back to the markets - once a month, every two months?
How long does it take you to make a single stand?
Where will you store your stands between markets

Added value: Try making cupcakes to go on the plates!

Lesson focuses on how computerized barcodes have improved efficiency in product distribution; explores the barcoding process and engineering design. Student teams work to identify problems associated with the current barcode system and propose a new system or product to improve the current system.

  • Learn about encoding systems — specifically barcodes — and decoding technology.
  • Learn about how barcodes interface with computer systems.
  • Learn about how barcodes have improved distribution efficiency and pricing accuracy of manufactured products.
  • Learn how the development of barcodes has impacted everyday life.
  • Learn about teamwork and engineering problem solving in groups.
