There are a huge variety of shampoos and conditioner brands with varying claims and ingredients. When working in, or running a salon, it important to know what is in the products you use, as well as getting products that are affordable and do what they claim.

1. Using the links provided for popular hair products, create a database (Excel spreadsheet), table or list allowing for comparison of price and ingredients of one brand of shampoos and conditioners - at least four products. You could also choose one of the products trialled by Choice

2. From this you can research one major/ interesting ingredient from each, and its importance in the product.

3. Do these products have ingredients that may confirm what products claim they can do?

4. Do they claim to work best on a particular hair type? If so, what ingredients or aspects of the product would allow it to do so?

5. Conduct a survey of all the students in your class. What shampoos and conditioners do they use? Why? How often do they shampoo? Are they pleased with the result? If not, why not?

Compare the results of your survey to the one conducted by Choice

Were there any differences in results?

6. What goes down the sink in your salon is also important for the environment!

Would you consider washing your clients' hair in Rosemary infused water (Rosemary Tea) instead?

Here is Shannon Lush's recipe:

10 - 15 springs of fresh rosemary or 6 - 12 tsp dried rosemary or 10 - 15 drops of rosemary essential oil in a full pot of boiling water. Steep for 15 minutes and strain into a bottle. Use this instead of shampoo. You'll start to see a real difference after 3 washes. When hair is extra oily put a tsp brown sugar in the palm of your hand. Mix with the rosemary tea and wash hair. The sugar binds with the oils and cleans hair quickly. (NB make sure that the Rosemary Tea does not go into the eyes. Rosemary

7. Ask the students in your survey to try the Rosemary Water Infusion (that you have made - give the students the recipe). Ask them to do this for at least 3 washes. Is there a difference?

Compare the cost of the Rosemary Infused Water and the cost of shampoos and conditioners.

8. Research the following "No Poo" Method

No Poo

Is this something you would embrace after trying the Rosemary Tea? Why? Why not?
