Research and Development - EXERCISE SPORTS SCIENTIST
Sleep and Success in Sports Primary Middle Secondary Australian Curriculum General Capability: Personal and social capability Australian Curriculum General Capability: Numeracy
1. According to research reported in The Conversation 2 February 2015 peak athletic performance is dependent on the sleep cycle. 2. You are to develop a database of your class' sleeping patterns. Each student is to record:
3. Plan a 200m run. Time each of the students and record their performance.
4. Ask the students to get 8 - 10 hours of sleep each night for a fortnight. Get them to record the times they go to sleep and when they wake up.
Now is the hardest part - they are not to use their electronic devices for at least 1 hour before bed (not even a peek @FB!)
5. Plan a 200m run. Time each of the students and record their performance. As an Exercise Sports Scientist, you are now to look at the results - individually but more importantly - as a whole class. Was there a difference in the results?
Fundamental Movement Skills - Will your school get above the national average? Primary Middle Secondary Australian Curriculum General Capability: Personal and social capability Australian Curriculum General Capability: Numeracy
1. Do you know what the "Fundamental Movement Skills" are? You are to read the following article from The Conversation 29 January 2015 to see what these skills entail.
2. Measure how well students the Fundamental Movement Skills. How will you do this? Share with your partner.
3. You are to develop an engaging program to run before or after school to increase the Fundamental Movement Skills of the students at your school. Get at least one teacher involved - as a supervisor - but you are to construct the fun exercises and also promote the activities so more and more students want to participate. 4. In pairs, develop your engaging program. Share with the class. As a class, refine the activities so that the most engaging and fun activities are the ones you will incorporate into your program.
5. Write up your suggested engaging program. Don't forget this means the students involved will do 60 minutes [total for the day] of physical activity. Again, share with the class and devised the best program. 6. Now you are to make up the best marketing program for the class' program. Your marketing is to persuade at least another class to join your class to use your engaging program. 7. After 9 weeks of your engaging program focusing on the Fundamental Movement Skills - remeasure how well the participating students are going.
8. Compare it to their first measurement.
9. Survey the students about how they think they are going. Take these results to the Principal and write a small article for the local newspaper and the school's newsletter. Ask parents for more help the following term. 10. Write to The Conversation's Editor - editorial@theconversation.edu.au about the success of your school and your program. Maybe think about the further Exercise Sports Science skills you could introduce in the following term!
