Transcript of article:
Following a recruitment process, Racing and
Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) is pleased to advise that Mr. Kristian
Hawkins has been appointed as a Cadet Steward within the harness code.
RWWA’s General Manager Integrity Denis Borovica welcomed the appointment
stating that Mr Hawkins’ long history within the industry would bring
valuable insight to the role.
“Mr Hawkins is well known in both equine codes as a former Jockey and more
recently Trainer/Driver in the harness code,” said Mr Borovica.
“Having been involved in the racing industry since 1995, he brings to the
position a considerable level of practical and grass roots knowledge with
respect to the conduct of racing. Once he has completed his cadetship and
acquired the necessary skills of Stewarding he will be a welcomed addition
to the panel.”
“RWWA is pleased to provide such career opportunities for industry
participants so that these unique skills and knowledge are retained and
utilised for the benefit of racing.”
Mr Hawkins is currently undertaking the necessary steps to cease his
licensed involvement in the industry in order to meet the requirements of
being a Steward with RWWA as specified in the Stewards Code of Conduct and
Rules of Racing.
It is anticipated that he will formally commence as of 16 March 2020

Handicaps:
How does it work, then?
Secondary
Australian
Curriculum General Capability: Numeracy
1. "The art of predicting which horse has the best winning rates requires
real talent and analytical thinking. There are over 100 factors to take into
consideration when applying a horse race handicap system such as the
preference for the race's track or maybe the recency-weighted strength of
other participants in a certain race. The trainer's ability to make
the horse and the jockey ready to win the race is also important.
A professional handicapper deals with very specific conditions that can have
an impact over the results, such as:
-
previous performances;
-
distances;
-
the
surface (sometimes).
S/He must make sure that each horse will carry a certain weight during the
competition. Mainly, the idea is to be able to tell which one will overcome
his/her handicap. The handicapper allocates the weight, and if needed, that
avoirdupois can be added to using:
(Source: Betoclock)
The
horse' ability to carry a certain weight decreases as the distance of the
tracks increases. The normal added weight is divided into top and bottom
types. In theory, putting heaviness on the top is supposed to be the best
option. A few pounds can hit a sour note during a race. The graphic below
explains how is the kilo versus length relationship going on during a race.
(Source: Betoclock)
Other
elements worth considering in this “calculation” are:
-
the horse's behavior, age, sex and maturity;
-
the number of the competitive races scheduled;
-
the previous race's frequency;
-
the victories won till that moment.
For
example, the WFA scale (Weight for Age) has been used for many years now to
make the physical progress of the horse equal with the average thoroughbred
type, as it matures. By the end of his/her third year, the stallion has
already reached a fully grown state."
(Source: Betoclock)
(Source: Betoclock)
"In theory, 2.2kg of extra weight
results in slowing a horse down by 1 length. So, if one horse carries 54.2kg
and another horse in the same race carries 52kg (a difference of 2.2kg),
then the horse carrying the heavier weight is giving 1 length to the other
horse." (Source:
Horse Lover's Math)
2. Individually work out:
- How many lengths advantage will a horse carrying
52kg have over a horse carrying 63kg?
- The highest-weighted winner of the Melbourne Cup
was Carbine who carried 65.5kg to win in 1890. The winner of the 2013
Melbourne Cup was Fiorente, who carried 55kg. Had these two horses run
in the same race, how many lengths would Carbine be giving Fiorente?
Round up your answer to the nearest tenths.
3. The following graph shows the number of horses of
different ages who have won the Melbourne Cup since it first began until
2013.
Re-do this graph to include the winners since 2013 using
the table below.
a. What is this kind of graph called?
b. What would you label the vertical axis?
c. What would be a good title for this graph?
d. How many 7 year old horses have won the Melbourne Cup
from your adjusted graph?
e. Which age categories have the greatest number of
winners?
f. The present record holder is the 1990 winner Kingston
Rule with the time of 3m16.3sec. In 2013, Fiorente finished with a time of
3min20.3sec. How much faster was Kingston Rule than Fiorente?
