 3. Go to your local scrap metal yard and look at the pieces of scrap metal that can be found there. Take an image and record the cost of each piece.

a. How much did all your pieces cost?

b. Was there any pieces that you thought were too expensive?

4. Go to your local markets. Is there any artists there selling Scrap Metal Art? Look at the cost of each item. Record them.

5. Go back to your scrap metal prices. Estimate how much you could make your Scrap Metal Art for. Is it competitive to the items you have seen?

6. Have a look at the following piece of art: Horseshoe Pear and the Sign

Pear
This piece of garden scrupture  is valued at around $900 - $1500
Love sign
while this simple sign is valued at $101.

7. Do you think you could have a market for your Scrap Metal Art?

8. How much would you charge?

What profit would you make per item?

Calculate the hourly rate of pay by dividing the profit by the number of hours.

For example: If you made the sign above and the profit is $60 and it takes you 5 hours to complete (including going to the scrap metal yard) then, you are working for an hourly rate of $12.

$60 takes 5 hours
x = 1 hour

60 x 1 = 5x
x = 60/5 = 12.

What is your hourly rate if the pear's profit is $1000 and it took you 15 hours to make?

What is the better rate?

Which design would you tackle? You need to take into account that the sign might sell more readily than the pear!

9. Have you decided on a Scrap Metal Art design? Work out what you can sell it for and your hourly rate of pay.

10. Discussion

Do you think the creation of Art out of Scrap Metal is a good way to help recycling and sustainability of metal? Discuss as a class.

11. Is it time to go into business? Share with your class.
