In Flanders Fields
BY JOHN MCCRAE In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. "Poppies have been used as a symbol of rest
and death since antiquity, so the choice of these flowers in particular
highlights the close link between life and death; they are vividly alive
even as their presence hints at death."
2. As a class, discuss the poem, its structure and meaning.

What is your reaction to this "sea" of crochet poppies?
4. You are going to create either a white poppy [with black centre] for the nurses, or a purple poppy for the animals - pigeons, horses, dogs [with black centre] or a traditional red poppy for the soldiers who lost their lives in the wars in the 20th and 21st Centuries. Decide which poppy you will make for an installation for your school as a Remembrance Art Work.
