This Mentor Program Manual has a range of activities that you can quizz yourself on.

Start completing activities from "Remember when" p. 12. You need to read from stories of champion umpires then answer the following:

  • Identify the challenges faced by the beginning or learning umpire

    • Having read the accounts by a range of umpires dealing with their first few games of Australian Football, what would you identify as the issues that initially made it a difficult job?

    • In each umpire’s account of his early days, what things encouraged him to stick at it?

“Glenn James was my mentor when I first got on the list. We trained from his place pre-season until he retired. The main things he impressed on me were: (1) to make each training session a quality one; (2) incorporate a balanced lifestyle with umpiring, i.e. family and work; (3) watch your diet! He also taught me a lot about tolerance, as being an umpire requires you to have a thick hide and focus on the things that are important to you in your job and ignore the idiots around you. The comments people threw at him as we ran around where we trained really shocked me, but this was 23 years ago!"

Field umpire Gavin Dore umpired 302 senior AFL matches including the 1996 AFL Grand Final.

Scenario: You have gathered at the monthly meeting for your basketball club. The president addresses you all and explains that the umpires no longer likes the rules or the game and want them to be changed. The president asks your group to create these new rules and then teach them to the umpires.

1. In groups of three to four students research the sport of Basketball and its rules by clicking onto this website: Reading

Basketball rules

You will need to break up the reading within the four people in your group! It is extensive.

2. On a piece of paper write down the current rules of your game in a simple way. Did you miss any?

3. Discussion

As a group, discuss and brainstorm what the new rules could be, you will need at least 10 new rules.

4. Once you all have agreed on these rules, on a new piece of paper create a rule sheet, book or brochure for the umpires explaining the reasoning of these new rules and their consequences.
