Is your school Water Wise?

1. Look at the following Water Wise website

Sydney Water

2. What are the current water rules at your school? Are they any?

3. After reading the Water Wise website, you need to investigate

  • When the sprinters are used at the school and how much water they use per minute.
  • The number of plants and how they are watered [remember plants cool down an environment so there might be a balance here with the electricity bill]
  • Are there any trees to close to water pipes? Has the school in the past had problems with blocked drains?
  • The number and size of water tanks. What is this water used for?
  • The size of the school's roof. Calculate how much water comes off the school's roof with 5 mm of rain
  • If the school recycles it's water - uses it's greywater. Why? Why not?

4. Investigation of the plumbing at the school. You are to create a siteplan of the school indicating all the taps, bubblers, and toilets.

restroom

On your siteplan, indicate which taps, bubblers or toilets are leaking or dripping. For the taps and bubblers, place an empty ice-cream container [or something similar] under the drip and calculate the amount of water wasted each hour. Combine all your findings and show how much water is wasted

  • Per day
  • Per week
  • Per term
  • Per year

What is the cost to the school for this wastage? [Calculate from the amount of water used per quarter and the cost per litre].

5. Present your findings to the School's Executive staff. What are your recommendations?

6. Work out what water rules should be followed at your school and introduce these new rules to the whole school at an assembly using a Prezi presentation.

7. Look at your water consumption at home. Would the rules be different here? Why? Why not?
