Community and Health - DermatologistSlip, Slop, Slap - updating the message Primary Middle Australian Curriculum General Capability: Literacy Australian Curriculum General Capability: Personal and social capability Australian Curriculum General Capability: Critical and creative thinking Cooperative Learning Activity
1. In groups of four, view the following original ad by the Cancer Council of Victoria - Slip, Slop, Slap. "One of the most successful health campaigns in Australia's history was launched in 1981, when a cheerful seagull in board shorts, t-shirt and hat danced his way across our TV screens singing the jingle." YouTube: Original Slip, Slop, Slap
: The Original Sid the Seagull Video
Write down the words to this jingle. Is it's message clear? Why? Why not? Do you like the music? Why? Why not? What do you like about this
iconic Australian ad? Explain giving reasons.
2. Compare
this 2010 version: Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide - Sid the Seagull 2010
with the original ad from 1981 (above).

Write down the words to this jingle. Do you like the music? Why? Why not? What do you like about this ad? Do you like it over the original? If not, why not? Is the additional message of "seek and slide" a good one for Australian conditions?
What do the rest of the class think?
3. Students in Primary school are still not getting this message entirely! Caps are considered "Ok" by students but they cover only a limited amount of the face and no neck is cover or the other way around. The
Cancer Council is also encouraging people to check how much protection their
hat is giving them by taking a selfie when the sun is highest and seeing
where the shadow falls. Take a guess about the amount of shade that is on your face and neck when you are wearing a cap.
Discuss in your group.
4. In your groups, you are to create a new jingle encouraging kids to wear a hat that will cover their faces and necks adequately. Put the new words to the original music. You might even want to copy Sid's lisp!
